Tools gms-mcp

AI assistants inside GameMaker.

gms-mcp is an open-source MCP server and command-line tool. It gives an AI coding assistant structured access to a GameMaker project: its assets, rooms, events and code, plus builds and a running game.

What it does

The assistant works on the real project.

It works with Cursor, Codex, Claude Code and other MCP clients. The same operations are available from the terminal without an AI client.

  • Understand a projectInspect assets, rooms, events and metadata, and find where GML is defined and used.
  • Create and change contentCreate assets, manage object events, place room instances and edit room layers.
  • Refactor and maintainRename and delete with references tracked, and find orphaned or missing resources.
  • Build and runCompile and launch through GameMaker's Igor toolchain, on a chosen runtime.
  • Talk to a running gameAn optional bridge sends supported commands to the game and reads its instrumented logs.

Getting started

Three commands.

You need Python 3.10 or newer and a GameMaker project. Building and running also need an installed GameMaker runtime.

  1. Installpipx install gms-mcp
  2. Connect your clientgms-mcp-init --client claude-code --scope workspace --action app-setupRun it in your game's project folder. Swap in cursor or codex for other clients.
  3. Check the connectiongms-mcp doctor --project

Access and safety

Read-only by default

Standard setup gives the assistant inspection tools only. Editing and builds are switched on separately.

One project per server

Each server is pinned to one GameMaker project and checks access against that boundary.

Use version control

Commit before letting an assistant edit, and avoid editing the same files in the IDE at the same time.

Telemetry off by default

Usage telemetry is opt-in. The project contents the assistant reads still go to your AI provider.

gms-mcp is MIT licensed and published on GitHub and PyPI. It is an independent project, not an official GameMaker product.
